As we see in the chart, for many countries divorce rates increased markedly between the 1970s and 1990s. In the US, divorce rates more than doubled from 2.2 per 1,000 in 1960 to over 5 per 1,000 in the 1980s. The second chart shows that the total number of people living in countries that have legalized same-sex marriage has increased from 15.9 million people in 2000 (0.3% of the global population) to 1.21 billion people in 2022 (15.1%).
